Stretch film for food products

Contact us!

Starting with 2004, our Enterprise supplies the foil for food-product packing, meeting the most stringent standards and carrying the mark „SMLQuality“ (SML – Specific Migration Level). These standards will take power in ES and Lithuania from 2005. The PVC food film with low level of specific migration is intended for packing cheese, meat, bread and bakery, fruits and vegetables.

Exclusive Film Features:

  • the film is more secure hygienically; there are used more polymeric plasticizers in its production free of DEHA (D-di, E-ethyl, H-hexyl, A-adipate), potentially increasing cancer risk;
  • very low packaging prices, when comparing to alternative packing methods;
  • especially suitable for packing fatty products;
  • highly transparent, i.e. packed product is perfectly visible;
  • it is permeable for oxygen O2 and carbon dioxide CO2, therefore, packed products are protected against mould and humidity; it protects the product against drying, spoilage, extraneous smells, so the food remains fresh for long time;
  • when packed into this film, food products doesn’t stick together in the freezer;
  • it reveals the product shape.

Our partner – Swiss film manufacturer „Alimantis“, purchased the film production division from the „Permapack AG“ (Switzerland) in 2003.

  • when the film was transported or stored at temperature lower than +50C, then it shall be left for 24 hours at least at temperature above +100C before use;
  • the film shall be protected against environmental impacts: high humidity, sudden temperature swings, direct sun light, etc.

What does it mean ‘migration’ and why is it important to understand it?

In order to assess risk of negative impact of the film to the food under packing, it is needed to take into account the aspect of plasticizer migration into the product.

Migration – penetration of polymeric substances and components of the package into the food products.

There are used different types of film for food product packing, containing plasticizers migrating into food products.

Plasticizers are organic substances giving plasticity to polymers and expanding their elastic state. They also increase resistivity to low temperatures, to shocks, facilitate film recycling.

There are used two types of plasticizers in foil manufacturing: monomeric ones, i.e. these, which are easily migrating into the product, and polymeric ones, which have stable state and aren’t penetrating the product. The monomeric plasticizers improve mechanical properties of the film, they are cheaper as comparing to polymeric ones, nevertheless, when the human organism accumulates large amount of one of these monomeric plasticizers, called DEHA (D-di, E-ethyl, H-hexyl, A-adipate), the cancer risk increases. And their contribution to the product final price isn’t crucial (5-7%).

In order to protect human health, the total level of plasticizer migration determined in ES Directives and Lithuanian Laws shall not exceed the value of 10 mg/dm2. Some developed countries, as Denmark, Italy and Switzerland, are applying more stringent requirements related to the health protection and define both the total and the specific levels of DEHA plasticizer migration – they should not exceed the value of 3 mg/dm2. Since 2005 the ES also will start to regulate the specific migration level (SML), i.e. DEHA amount.
